In an increasingly digital world, access to technology and digital skills has become essential for success in education, employment, and everyday life. Yet, for millions of underprivileged children around the globe, the digital divide continues to widen, cutting them off from these vital opportunities. At Beyond Childhood International, we believe that digital literacy is not a luxury — it's a right.
According to UNICEF, nearly two-thirds of school-age children worldwide have no internet access at home. In low-income communities, this lack of access means more than just missing out on fun apps or games — it translates to limited learning, social exclusion, and a perpetuating cycle of poverty.
Children in rural or underserved areas often attend schools that lack even basic computer infrastructure. The result is a severe disadvantage in higher education and job readiness compared to their digitally fluent peers. This is the harsh reality for many of the children Beyond Childhood serves.
Earlier this year, Beyond Childhood International launched the Digital for All initiative — a program designed to introduce digital literacy skills to children in underserved communities. The pilot began in Sri Lanka and Kenya, where we partnered with local schools and NGOs to provide:
Refurbished laptops and tablets
Offline educational content in local languages
Workshops on basic computer skills, online safety, and coding fundamentals
Mentorship sessions with tech professionals from around the world
More than 400 children participated in the first three months of the program. For many, it was their first time using a keyboard or exploring the internet. Their faces lit up not just with excitement, but with curiosity — the spark of potential waiting to be unlocked.

Meet Ayesha, a 12-year-old girl from Kandy, Sri Lanka. Before the program, Ayesha had never touched a computer. She struggled in school, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when everything moved online. After just two months in our program, she now writes simple programs using Scratch and dreams of becoming a web developer.
Or Samuel, a 14-year-old in Kisumu, Kenya, who used the digital resources to help his mother market handmade crafts online. His family’s income has since increased by 20%.
These are not just success stories — they are proof that when given the tools, children can shape their own future.
Our mission doesn't end with handing over devices. Beyond Childhood is committed to creating sustainable ecosystems. We train local teachers and youth mentors, develop community-owned resource centers, and advocate for digital policies that prioritize marginalized children.
We also run child protection workshops to ensure that as kids come online, they do so safely, avoiding exploitation, misinformation, and harmful content.

Every child deserves a fair shot at the future — and in today’s world, that future is digital. By bridging the digital divide, Beyond Childhood International is not just teaching kids to code or surf the web — we’re helping them rewrite their stories.
Because when children are empowered, communities are transformed.
